IEEE is a non-profit corporation, incorporated in the state of New York on 16 March, 1896.

The purpose of IEEE is to engage exclusively in scientific and educational activities directed towards advancement of theory and practice of electrical, electronics, communications and computer engineering as well as computer science, allied branches of engineering and related arts and sciences. IEEE, although, stands for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, it has always consisted of all, be it engineers, scientists, or allied professionals. These include computer scientists, software developers, information technology professionals, physicists, medical doctors, and many others in addition to core strength of electrical and electronics engineering. IEEE inspires a global community to innovate for a better tomorrow through its more than 423,000 members in over 160 countries.
